HRS Toolbox started with a frustration that most working people share but rarely say out loud: the salary you're promised and the salary you receive are two different numbers, and almost nobody explains the space between them. Our founding editor spent years watching friends accept job offers, take on freelance work, and turn down raises based on gross figures they didn't fully understand — and losing real money in the process. She built the first version of these calculators to answer her own paycheck questions honestly, and it grew from there.

That's the mission that still drives this site. We're not writing for HR departments or employers modelling their cost of hiring.
